What is your skin barrier?
"Our skin barrier ensures that our skin is able to function effectively while increasing the body’s ability to fight against external irritants like bacteria and pollution. Made of a very thin layer of oil and sweat, our acid mantle is vital for skin health for several reasons; it regulates moisture levels, protects from environmental damage and irritants like UV radiation, wind, and pollution, inhibits bacterial growth (which leads to congestion and inflammation), keeps skin taut and protects from oxidative damage. It plays a critical role in overall skin health, texture and quality. " - British Beauty Council Expert Melanie Grant
What can damage your skin's barrier?
"Our skin barrier can become compromised by over exfoliating, introducing too many actives or actives too quickly and most commonly by incorrect product use. If your skin is feeling parched, chapped, dry, tight, irritated, is more reactive or flushes more easily than usual or if you're experiencing persistent congestion it's likely that your barrier is compromised." - Melanie Grant
How can I tell if my skin barrier is damaged?
"If your skin feels tight, itchy, or easily irritated, your barrier might be compromised. Keep it healthy by avoiding harsh exfoliants and instead, focus on ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to restore balance. Think of your skin barrier as the foundation for every step of your skincare routine." - Dr. Ifeoma Ejikeme
How can I care for my skin barrier?
"Skincare focusing on hydration and moisturisation are key to supporting a healthy skin barrier. Use humectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin to draw water onto the skin surface and seal the hydration with moisturising actives like ceramides. Avoid washing the skin in extreme temperatures, over exfoliating or using too many actives, all of which can compromise the skin barrier. If the skin is dry and sensitive then it is important to avoid fragrances and harsh surfactants and opt for fragrance-free, soap-free cleansers instead. - Dr. Sharon Wong
"Look for ingredients like squalene, ceramides, peptides, fatty acids, hyaluronic acid and botanicals like calendula and even manuka honey. Avoiding physical exfoliants, opting for a lactic or enzymatic formula and using sparingly once a week is also key." - Melanie Grant
